We can all get bored with our decor. What we may have loved a few years ago perhaps doesn’t have the same appeal anymore. Sometimes when we buy a property, we can be so eager to decorate it throughout. But we don’t think about the colour palettes or how it may look with different pieces of furniture. So if you find yourself wanting to give your home a makeover, but worrying about the cost, then this is the article for you. I have just finished my first DIY home makeover adventure, 2 weeks of ‘blood, sweat and tears’ and 2 weeks of great fun, chaos, and mess everywhere. But looking at the stunning result now, thinking … yeees, what an amazing feeling! So, I thought I would share with you some quick and easy tips that promise not to break the bank.

1. all about the kitchen

One of the biggest expenses when it comes to easy home makeovers is the kitchen. However, it can be one of the rooms in your home that adds the most value when done right. Of course, this isn’t about spending too much money. So there will be no suggestion of replacing the whole kitchen. But there are plenty of things you can do in this room to give it a completely new look.

The first thing to consider would be the kitchen cabinets. Are they in good condition? Many people will save on a kitchen by just replacing, or refurbishing those doors. A lot of a kitchen cost is to do with the shell of the kitchen cabinets, worktop and of course the labour that goes into fitting it. Kitchen cupboards can be rehung fairly easily. So if you want a high gloss finish then choose a door to complement your new style. Make sure you consider any woodwork and the worktop colour, to ensure your new choice works well with your existing kitchen.

Another alternative would be to paint the kitchen cupboard doors. Mine just went from very dark brown to glossy white, some nice new door knobs and you’re looking at a new kitchen. Or even consider sanding the doors down and restraining them a different colour. The cabinet doors will capture your attention when entering the kitchen. So giving them a new look would give off the impression that your kitchen is brand new!

Tiling on the walls is another thing you could decide to change without it costing you too much money. Perhaps opting for a cleaner finish like a bright white tile. Something neutral that would work with any colour scheme you intend to incorporate. Finally, add some new fixtures and appliances. Perhaps considering a theme like a vintage style or ultra-modern.

2. what about the master bedroom?

The master bedroom is where you go to relax in the evening. So it’s essential to get the decoration in this room exactly right. The last thing you will want is bright and engaging colours, especially when you are trying to relax your mind ready for sleep. The master bedroom is quite an easy room to makeover. The bed is the biggest focal point.

Sometimes considering changing your bedding and linen can make a huge difference for a tiny cost. Add some new scatter cushions and it could give the room a whole different feel.

Our bedrooms can be one of the places where clutter can gather. So consider having a big clearout and work towards a more minimalist look if you prefer that. It could make a huge difference to your bedroom space.

3. guest bedroom ideas with wow Factor

Similarly to the master bedroom, you will want to incorporate a more relaxed vibe into the guest rooms. However, you may want to use more accessories to dress these rooms up. Candles can make a great feature. Adding a touch of elegance to a room. Switching the bedding and soft furnishings in this room could make a huge difference once more. Consider the colour scheme when choosing your new accessories.

4. make living spaces modern and comfortable

Your living room and any living spaces you have in your home are there for you to relax in. They might be where you read your book or chat with the family. Perhaps it’s the place where you like to watch TV. Considering what you use each room for is essential to making sure you get the decor right. Comfort is key, so consider that when furnishing the room.

Of course, in many of these spaces, you may have large pieces of furniture like sofas or coffee tables. If you don’t want to replace those, then add a few different elements to give them a new lease of life. Perhaps adding a few modern touches to the living room like bean bag loungers could make a great alternative to chairs. Hm .. if you’ve visited my blog before, you will have noticed that I am a bean bag fan!

While this isn’t about spending money, you may want to consider your options when it comes to the largest purchases. Sofas can be quite costly, but reupholstering them won’t be anywhere near as much. You could potentially make your sofa look completely different by adding new material. Again, making use of what you have and refurbishing items will save you a lot of money in the long run.

5. give your bathroom the spruce up it needs

Along with the kitchen, a bathroom is another big area where you can increase the value of your home. But without replacing a bathroom suite, which can be expensive, what can you do? Sometimes this means getting a little smart with your decor ideas. Tiling in a bathroom covers a vast surface area. It could be what your eye is instantly drawn to as you enter the room. So replacing that with some new design or modern touch could make an old bathroom appear brand new. Especially if you have a neutral white suit to work with.

You may also want to spend some time resealing the bath and shower units. Often they can get a black mould on them, through no fault of your own. Adding a fresh new sealant will give the bathroom a big lift. Adding modern fixtures to a bathroom won’t cost a great deal, but could give it that extra modern look. Replacing the taps for something a little different or adding a heated radiator could be small costs that add huge value in the long term.

6. don’t underestimate the power of colour

Decorating and designing your home should be an extension of your personality. But what you don’t want to do is create an abundance of colours that don’t flow together. A home is essentially one unit with different rooms. Adding clashing colours could make the home feel small and enclosed. This is something to consider if you plan on reselling your property in the future. Work off a colour palette and try and pick up accents from it throughout the home.

Let’s be honest, repainting your entire home will cost you a small fortune. However, you could consider making minor changes that will equally have a big impact. Feature walls are an excellent way of drawing attention, while only having to paint one wall. Make sure the paint colour works with the existing wall colour before you do it. Otherwise, it will have the opposite effect.

If some of the rooms do need a completely new lick of paint, then make sure you focus on the main rooms only for now. This will keep the cost down. The kitchen, bathroom, living space and master bedroom should always be the first rooms you consider. After all, they have the biggest impact.

7. add personal touches to your home

This is your home, not a show house. So make sure you add some personal touches throughout. Pictures in frames or on the wall can be great talking points. Feature walls don’t have to consist of paint; they could also be created with a photograph montage using a funky framework. Try and think outside of the box.

8. consider the flooring

Like the walls, flooring is one of the biggest surface areas in your home. So considering how it looks is essential to any makeover. Again, replacing the whole flooring in a house will cost a fortune. But adding small things could make a big difference. Rugs and carpet areas can conceal flooring that perhaps doesn’t look its best, especially if it is wood flooring.

You may also want to invest in an industrial carpet cleaner to bring those carpets back to their former glory. If some rooms need the flooring replaced, try and consider using a carpet option or laminate. Both of these are less pricey than traditional wood flooring, but will still have an excellent finish once fitted.

9. make the most out of the lighting

Finally, make sure you take advantage of the lighting in your home. Your biggest asset is natural light. So open up those blinds and curtains and let it in. If you don’t have the advantage of big windows, make sure you consider lighting that works well with the room. Modern light fittings or something grander like chandeliers can be big feature points of the room. I hope my tips on  ” How to decorate your home on a budget ”  have made you realize that giving your home a makeover won’t cost you a fortune, it’s the little things that can make a huge impact!  Thank you very much for reading!
