A Beginner’s Guide to Meditation

There’s no better method for calming the mind than meditation. And, what does a quiet mind lead to? Happiness! Despite the obvious benefits, many of us fail to master meditation. There are many books that teach you to bring your mind to the moment. What many fail to mention is the boredom when you first practice meditation. That’s right; boredom!

Don’t be ashamed to admit that you’ve felt it too. In a world where we fill every moment with distraction, we can expect to feel a little bored when we first sit and do nothing. But, as you perfect your practice, that boredom will make way for calmness. These tips should help you in your quest towards the perfect meditation journey!

 # When is the best time to meditate?

If you want to get into any habit, it’s important to set aside a particular time. Meditation is no different, so when is the best time to meditate? It doesn’t matter if you start meditating in the morning or afternoon, practising at the same time each day is a sure way of breaking through your wall. You may want to put some other routines in place, too. Playing the same music, or drinking the same drink beforehand, will help to prepare you. Even so, it’s going to be hard. You’re going to need to persevere. If you’ve set aside half an hour, set a timer, and meditate until the time is up. Continue to sit through the boredom. This is your meditation time, so get meditating!

 # Meditation Aids

If you’re practising in your set time and still struggling, it might help to get some aids. Of course, all you need for meditation is your mind and a quiet space. Still, aids can help you start. They can also give your practice focus, which can be a huge help. Invest in some calming CDs. Natural sounds, such as birdcall and crashing waves are perfect. Remember that you don’t want anything distracting. The music is just background noise to help you find a peaceful place.

It might also help to invest in these mala prayer beads or others like them. Many Buddhist monks use these. The idea is that you feel each bead, repeating a mantra for everyone. It’s also useful to buy some incense for the occasion. Purchase a scent that evokes a sense of calm. Lighting the same scent each time can also help with that routine we were talking about.

 # Creating a meditation space

Creating a meditation space can be a great way to get in the right frame of mind. Only enter that area when you’re going to meditate. Your mind should get to a point where it calms as soon as it enters the space. If you have a spare room for this, great. Make it the space you need it to be. Incorporate cushions and a music system. Remember to stay away from distraction, though! Keep things simple. If you don’t have a spare room to dedicate to meditation, don’t worry. Choose, instead, a particular corner of a room. Make sure it’s a place that doesn’t have a lot of traffic passing through!

I started my new fitness program this week, so maybe I’ll try to incorporate meditation into it. Can’t hurt…

Meditation is great. Even sleeping comes easier when I have a regular meditation practice.
