How to take some of the chaos out of moving home

One of the most stressful and chaotic things any of us will go through is moving house. There are all kinds of variable factors that go into it, which opens up the floor for any number of problems that can pop up and turn your plans on their head! Here, I’ve listed 3 universal tips for a less chaotic move…

Moving House Checklist

1. Keep Organized While You Pack

Understandably, packing may not be the first thing on your mind with such a big change on the horizon. However, to make the process as easy as possible, you should be, packing may not be the first thing on your mind with such a big change on the horizon. However, to make the process as easy as possible, you should be getting started with it as soon as you know you’re definitely going to move. Packing up a whole house worth of stuff takes a long time, and as soon as you get stuck into it, the sooner you’ll have it out of the way!

Start with the most non-essential items, and come up with a good system for organizing and streamlining the whole packing process. Pack room by room, and label each box with the room it’s meant to end up in. By packing early, you’ll also be able to plan for any major problems that can spring up later in the process. This will give you more time to contact any extra services you may need, such as Canning Vale Storage Units

2. Time it Right

Seen as you clicked on this post, this tip may be a little too late. However, if you still have some flexibility in terms of the actual moving day, I suggest you use it! Just like any niche, moving companies get their business in peaks and troughs, and are usually most busy during the summer. If you’ve pushed the big day past May, it could be worth rolling it back slightly.

It’s also a good idea to make your moving day fall on a weekday rather than a weekend. The roads will be much less crowded, and you’ll have better access to various stores and services that you may need. It’s also likely to be cheaper! The moving date itself may not sound like a big deal, but believe me, it can make all the difference.

3. Take Care of Yourself (and others!)

Any high-stress situation, from a big domestic project to a full-blown emergency, can be so much worse when you’re not in the right state of mind for it. If you let yourself become tired, dehydrated and cranky too close to the date, then you’re pretty much inviting stress into your moving day! Every move is going to be a little tough, but it can be so much worse when you’re feeling physically and mentally drained.

Make sure you leave yourself enough time so that you can take breaks in the packing and unpacking process. Get plenty of sleep the night before, have a big breakfast, and be sure to bring plenty of water and healthy snacks with you. If you’re moving with the whole family, keep an eye on everyone to ensure no one gets dehydrated, fatigued or stressed.
