How to Prepare Your Skin for the Harsh Winter

As we pack away our summer clothes, it’s vital not to forget to curate our bathroom cabinets as well. Just as our bodies are in need of warmer and cozier clothes that will protect us from the harsh weather conditions that are upon us, our skin craves and needs the same kind of protection. Therefore, it’s high time we put our summer skin care goodies aside for the time being and get ready because things are about to take a turn to the chilly side and we need to do everything in our power to face the harshness fully prepared.

Here are six really valuable winter skin care tips Peter Minkoff, fashion stylist, writer and editor in chief located in Brisbane, Australia has put together for you. For more from & about Peter please visit highstylife.comThanks for co-working once more, Peter. It’s been, as always, a great pleasure!

   1. Cleanliness for Starters

Light washes and micellar water makeup removers were great summer cleansing tools, but the skin needs all the nourishment it can get so it’s time to switch to ‘heavier’ formulas, such as creamy makeup removal lotions, that both cleanse and nourish the skin. Something along the lines of organic skincare collections fits the bill just right as it not only removes the heaviest of makeup but also softens and nourishes the skin. Next in line is a good and, again, nurturing face wash, preferably from the creamy family.

   2. The One Not to Forget

As much as summer dries our skin making it thirsty and in dire need of exfoliation, harsh weather works in similar ways as the wind and the cold suck the moisture from the skin, making it flaky and, again, in need of exfoliation.

Winter Skin Care Tips
Winter Skin Care Tip 2 – Exfoliate your skin 2 to 3 times a week.

Keep in mind that, without exfoliation, the dead skin cells will just sit on your skin, hindering the effects of the skin care products to come, so never forget to exfoliate, two to three times a week. Make sure you use only the most gentle exfoliators as not all exfoliators are made equal, so stay away from the abrasive ones and always go for kind but powerful ones.

   3. All in One

This is not a mandatory step, but it is a recommended one. You see, when you shop for nourishing and protective products such as eye creams, moisturizers and serums, it’s best to stick with one brand as the formula of each product is designed to work with the product that comes after it for optimal results. So, when choosing these products, make sure they come from the same, the best possible line of products for the skin because that’s the only way to keep your skin fully protected.

Winter Skin Care Tip 3 – Buy products from the best possible line

Do your research and find not only the skin care line that’s suitable for this weather but one that also caters to the needs of your specific skin type, as with the wrong product, you can’t expect great results.

   4. Oils are Your Friend

There are so many wonderful facial oils on the market that we’re not even going to tell you which ones to pick – go with your gut and your scent preference, but make sure to make oils an integral part of your routine. They basically drench your skin in moisture and more than that, create a powerful barrier between you and external pollutants so it’s a double win – skin 2, harsh weather 0.

Winter Skin Care Tip 3 - Make oils an integral part of your routine.
Winter Skin Care Tip 4 – Make oils an integral part of your routine.

Pro tip: if you have oily skin, apply the oil before your moisturizer and in case you have dry or sensitive skin, apply the serum and moisturizer first, wait for them to soak up and then apply the oil on top.

   5. Rely on Nature

Again, just as the sun, the harsh weather can cause premature ageing due to dehydration, and while there are serums out there specifically designed to fight signs of ageing, why not take the natural route first and give these homemade anti-aging remedies a try first. Different countries always come with their own concoctions and some of them are highly effective, so before you break the bank for an expensive product, give these remedies a go.

   6. Kiss me Hard Before you Go

Never, ever, forget to protect the lips. Now, tinted lip balms look cute, but harsh weather calls for heavy artillery and you already know that those shiny tinted ones aren’t cut out for the job. Instead, go with local handmade lip products. Keep one of these in your bag or pocket at all times and apply several times a day, because trust us, those lips need it.

Winter Skin Care Tips
Winter Skin Care Tip 6 – Don’t forget to protect the lips

Finally, never be caught without the thickest hand cream money can buy because there are very few feelings as unpleasant as dry and cracked fingers, so protect those hands, we beg of you. Just as with lip balm, keep it in your purse, desk, and essentially wherever you go and apply every time you wash your hands or just feel that they’re getting a little dry. You’re all set with recommendations, now go, shop, renew your skincare arsenal, get ready and don’t let the weather conditions take away your glow.
