Budgets tend to be squeezed extra tight around the holidays, but we still want to make our homes look festive and inviting.  There’s no need to go out and spend hundreds of dollars on decorations when your home can look just as lovely at a fraction of the cost. Let’s take a look at some of the best ways to decorate on a budget.

   use what you have

The number one tip when it comes to decorating on a budget is to use what you already have. When you shop your own home first, that’s less money that you’d have otherwise spent at the store. Everyday items such as boxes, candle holders or a tissue box cover can be updated for the holiday with an inexpensive Christmas ribbon tied around it.

Add last year’s Christmas cards to picture frames that you already have to create a decorative gallery. As new cards come in this year, find a way to use them as a decoration. Wide strips of ribbon can be attached to the top and bottom of a door and cards clipped to the ribbon. As new cards are added, the decoration will grow and change making for a lovely addition to your holiday home.

Raid your sewing box. Buttons strung on a thin piece of wire can be shaped into a wreath ornament. These little button wreaths make adorable gifts in addition to being a great decor piece. Keep digging past the buttons and you may find scraps of fabric in Christmas colours. Those little fabric scraps can be transformed into Christmas pillow covers or a fabric garland to swag along your mantle.

Not only will this result in huge monetary savings, but it’s also environmentally friendly to purchase used instead of new. High-quality items can be found at thrift and resale stores for a fraction of what they cost new. This is especially around the holidays when people are cleaning out their own homes for the holidays and are moved to donate items that they no longer want or need. Their loss is your gain!

You never know what you may find when out thrift shopping. Keep your eyes peeled for candlesticks, photo frames and small Christmas themed knick-knacks that can be spray painted for pennies and added to your decor.

   get the kids involved

There isn’t much sweeter than child-made decorations at Christmas. If you have kids at home or grandkids nearby, enlist them to help you make cheap Christmas decorations for your home. With nothing more than construction paper, recycled cereal boxes, glitter, paint and glue you’ll be amazed at what they can come up with. A paper bag advent chain is a lovely way to combine an activity and a decoration in one. 

Painted handprints of little children is an adorable way to make not only cheap Christmas decorations, but treasured keepsakes as well. Footprints can be added to plain ball ornaments, painted onto small flower pots or put right onto a piece of paper to be hung. Choose holiday themed paint colours (red, green, white, silver and gold) and be sure to write their name and date on their newly created masterpiece.

   think outside the box

There are places around the house that we tend to forget when decorating. How cute would it be to match your desktop wallpaper to the colours in your Christmas stockings or Christmas tree skirt? Add a few bows to photo frames already hanging on the wall or ribbon to kitchen cabinet doors to make them look like presents. There are so many ways to add holiday cheer in unexpected places.

It really is easier than it seems to decorate on a budget. With a little bit of creative thinking and re-purposing items you already have laying around, your home can be transformed into the Christmas wonderland of your dreams.
