7 Fine Weather Jobs To Do Before Winter Hits

The summer is coming to an end, and that means there won’t be quite as many days when we are blessed with good weather. So it is important to try and make the most of fine weather days whenever you get the chance. And the best way to do this is to do all the house maintenance jobs that you’ve been meaning to do on the outside of your property. I’m sure there will be plenty of jobs to keep you going until winter. Not sure what you should focus on?

1. Paint Treated Wood

Wooden window frames and doors can quickly look old and a little tatty. So it will certainly pay off to give all the wood on the outside of your property a lick of paint. Try and find time to do this at least once a year. You should still give it a coating of a protective gloss that can help it get through periods of bad weather.  Make sure you paint treated wood when you know that the next few days are going to be dry. If it rains as soon as you have done a coat, you will only have to do it all over again!

2. Garden Lawn Maintenance

Hopefully, you will have been keeping on top of your lawn throughout the summer and mowing it regularly. Now that the weather is a lot cooler, the grass will be growing extremely slowly. So you can pack up your lawnmower until next summer. But that doesn’t mean you can ignore your grassy areas for the next few months. In fact, right now is the best time to do some garden lawn maintenance.

After you have mowed your lawn for the final time this year, give it a good coating of grass feed and weed killer. If you notice some bare patches in the grass, now is a good time to sow some new seeds. You should also rake up any dead leaves that fall onto the lawn. These should be used for compost. If you leave them on the grass, they will turn into a wet mush and attract pests.

3. What About Trees And Shrubs

Fall is the best time to buy new trees and shrubs from your local garden center. You can start to plant them now, although the optimum time for planting shrubs and trees is October. If you already have some hardwood plants in your garden, you should think about taking cuttings from them now. Any berry bushes need to be pruned too and don’t forget to buy some tree and shrub fertilizer! Trees and flowering shrubs are the easiest way to spruce up your ‘outdoor home decor look’

4. Sort Out Your Roof

How is your roof looking? Do you think that it will last through winter; even during periods of excessive snow and rain? If not, it could be worth doing some work on it. Even if you just need to replace a roof tile or roll in a small crack, it will certainly be worth it. Otherwise, bad weather could make the damage even worse. And that could end in you paying a lot for extensive roof repairs. You should be able to do these small jobs on your own. However, if you don’t have too much time or aren’t too sure what you are doing, get a professional roofer. There are many different companies who specialize in roofs, such as SonShine Roofing.

5. Clean Out Sheds And Storage Buildings

Many of us tend to neglect our sheds and storage buildings over time. They eventually just get filled with our junk and things that we don’t really use that much. In fact, they can become a bit of a burden. However, you will get so much more out of your shed if you clear it out and start to give it a proper purpose. Spend one day in your shed sorting through all the clutter. Take a look at everything you find. Do you really need to keep it?

If not, but it is still in good condition, you could see about selling it on eBay. Or perhaps you have a friend or relative who might be able to put things to good use? Once you have cleared out all your junk, you should only have gardening tools and equipment in it. You’ll find that you also have much more room in your shed so that you have plenty of space to work in it. It will quickly become an important spot for all your gardening jobs.

6. Clean Out Your Pond

Get out into your garden and clean out your pond on the next sunny day that comes. Ponds will need cleaning out at least once a year if you want to encourage wildlife in them. Cleaning them out can also prevent them becoming unsightly. Now is the best time to get into your pond, as there won’t be much active wildlife in it. However, remember to keep a tank nearby that you can put any creatures in while you are cleaning their habit.

7. Cover Vegetables

If you have a vegetable patch in your garden, now is the time to cover it with some netting. Once the weather gets colder, birds will find it difficult to find food. And the first place they will start looking is in your garden. So creating a physical border between them and your veggies is a great way to help your vegetables last the winter.

This is amazing. I don’t think people even realise that they have to be well prepared before winter approaches. This is a real useful one. Winter is coming after all.

WOW! It is so much different from us here in tropical countries. Here we only have two seasons. That doesn’t mean there is not much maintenance to do. See, the ONE thing everyone needs to do is to fix the roof. Make sure there are no holes for water to seep in. Depending on the property or house, there may be other things to do. What we do a lot too is pray the typhoon season passes by and we are spared from super typhoons – hurricane category 5 for you.
